ASU News Briefs
The National Tragedy Brought
Us Together
Classes were cancelled at 11:30 a.m. on September 11, and many who remained
on campus sought out televisions and other means of getting news. Large screens
were set up in Hardy Hall and in Washington Hall where military historian
Hubert van Tuyll answered questions raised by viewers and reporters from three
local television station. In the weeks following the attacks, more questions
were being raised and additional faculty were called on to provide commentary.
In addition to several more interviews with van Tuyll about terrorism, television
reporters obtained expert commentary on other related topics. The event's
effect on different aspects of the economy was addressed by WRDW, WJBL, or
WAGT in interviews with Jurgen Brauer, Don Howard, Jonathan Leightner, Todd
Schlutz, and Joseph Greene, College of Education, and Julie Goley, Career
Center. William Wellnitz, biology, spoke with WRDW about biological warfare.
Because many people saved the newspapers that covered the tragedy, Diane Black,
Reese Library, talked with WRDW about preserving newspapers.
Following
the national tragedy that occurred September 11, students, faculty, and staff
gathered at the university's flagpole for a remembrance ceremony. Those in
attendance were given the opportunity to share their feelings and thoughts.
Several local ministers and counselors from ASU's Counseling and Testing Center
were also available to talk with individuals who sought counsel. The event
was organized by ASU students and coordinated by the Dean of Students Joyce
Jones.
Phi Kappa Phi Forum Reflects on Terrorism
A Phi Kappa Phi forum on September 19 drew more than 200 people to hear faculty
experts discuss different aspects of terrorism. Participating in the Reflecting
on Terrorism forum were Jurgen Brauer, economics, Ray Whiting, political science;
Hubert van Tuyll, military history; and Michael Bishku, history and the Middle
East. Lee Ann Caldwell, history, moderated the event. A video of the program
is available for check-out in Media Services.
