Web Publishing

Department and personal home page publishers are responsible for their own web pages. This includes responsibility for avoiding copyright violations, complying with university standards, and keeping the information up-to-date. Copyright laws apply to electronic publishing as well as to print publishing. Be sure you have permission to use information, graphics, or photographs on your pages if you are not the originator.

When creating your department web page, include the university logo (except on personal pages). Make your pages accessible to persons with disabilities by using alternatives or "ALTS" for all graphics. Avoid pdf files if possible; they must be opened to be viewed. Be sure to check all your links before publishing your page to the server. If you need help writing or setting up your page, call the Office of Public Relations and Publications (737-1876) , or for technical questions, contact the Office of Information Technology (737-1484).

Remember that your pages will not look the same to every viewer. Pages will view differently depending on the browser and what type of computer platform is being used. Some viewers have monitors with fewer colors. Try not to overload pages with graphics that will slow the load time and frustrate viewers. The more complex you make your graphics and the more images you use, the longer it will take for the page to load.

For visual consistency, the designers in the Office of Public Relations and Publications are responsible for designing the top tier pages of the campus web site They are also responsible for most graphics and content posting on Campus Pipeline. Contact the office at 737-1876 if you need assistance.
