Transition Supports for Students
After being accepted and before attending Orientation, new
undecided students may have specific transition concerns addressed in an
ASU Prep appointment with a staff member in Academic Advisement.
Academic Advisors from Academic Advisement can be found on campus
to answer questions through "The Advisor Is In" during the first
weeks of the term, shortly before midterm, during early registration and
before finals.
Q&A handouts answering questions common to new students are
available on a variety of topics. These informational topics can be found
on MOO, in our office, and via our website at http://www.aug.edu/umac.
Advising Undecided Students
One of the primary functions of Academic Advisement is to serve as
the advising department for undergraduate students with fewer than 40
semester hours earned who are as yet undecided about their majors.
Academic Advisement is staffed full time by specially trained academic
advisors to assist these students in formulating their educational plans.
Each term, Academic Advisement communicates throughout the term
with our enrolled advisees.. In addition to important dates and
registration information, these emails include connections to campus
resources to help students choose majors and connect to campus resources.
To introduce students to the process of selecting a major, we offer
Major Decisions, a special guidebook for
undecided advisees. This guide identifies campus resources and takes an
undecided student through each step in the process of choosing a major at AugustaStateUniversity.
Advising Supports for the Campus Community
Academic Advisement also provides campus-wide training and support
for academic advisors and support staff wishing to upgrade their skills
through the Advisors' Workshops. Several topics are offered in this series
sponsored jointly by Academic Advisement and the Registrar.
The center continues advisor support with Advisors' Notes newsletters
published prior to each registration period. These web posts provide
faculty members and support staff with the latest information on changes
in the registration process.
To assist students in understanding the advising process, Academic
Advisement and the Registrar present special Advising Edge programs at key
points in the term. These initiatives encourage students to connect to
their degree programs and take an active role in the advising
relationship.
