Welcome to Major Decisions |

Welcome to Major Decisions! Although decisions are a part of your everyday life, some decisions are more
challenging than others. An integral part of your college experience is the selection of a major and the development
of a career path. As a student, you have primary responsibility for making decisions about your educational goals,
including selection of courses, major and career. UMAC assists you in building toward your goals
by providing support during this transition time and by helping you connect to appropriate programs. UMAC offers
Major Decisions as a practical tool to guide you through the selection process.
Just as each student is unique, so are the reasons for being undecided. There is no single answer - no simple formula for making your selection. Major Decisions provides you with a basic structure within which you may build your own educational plan. Although the outline takes you from exploring to declaring, you may find you need to spend more time in one area, less in another, or even to repeat an earlier step. The format adapts to fit your needs, while helping you stay on track. Becoming certain about your educational goals is a part of the developmental experience which college is all about. By indicating that you are undecided, you have taken the first step in beginning the process. This book is designed to encourage your active participation to continue the process of formulating your educational plan. Although degree programs at Augusta State University share a common core of classes, many programs have preferred or required courses within the core. As you earn credits for classes successfully completed, there is a need to begin narrowing choices for major selection in a timely manner to avoid taking unnecessary classes. Therefore, a basic time line is incorporated into Major Decisions. The process of making sound decisions requires periods of reflection and testing. You need someone with whom you may discuss your ideas and clarify your options. The UMAC staff is dedicated to providing quality service. Three full time academic advisors are available to assist you, to provide a sympathetic ear, to suggest alternatives to consider, and to make appropriate referrals. Major Decisions incorporates periodic checks with your UMAC advisors, along with faculty/professional interviews and sessions with professional career counselors to help you check your progress. You should keep in mind that there are many paths leading to your goals. Multiple areas of interest may often be combined to create a unique career path. You may elect to major in more than one area or to combine a major area of study with a minor concentration. You may begin in one field and pursue another in graduate school. The challenge before you now is to decide on which path to begin. Major Decisions is your guidebook! |
