What are CPC's?
|
A Transition Support tool from Augusta State University Academic Advisement
|
The College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) was developed by the State Board
of Education in an effort to address post secondary institutions'
complaints that students were graduating from high school without
sufficient academic preparation for college.
Effective with the Class of
1988, students graduating from public schools in Georgia were required to
meet the state approved curriculum in order to earn the type diploma that
allows them to enroll in the state's public colleges.
To accommodate students who decided late to attend college or who attended
high schools that did not offer the entire curriculum, the University
System agreed to grant provisional acceptance to students who had not
completed all CPC requirements.
Students who otherwise qualify for
admission may enroll providing that they make up any CPC deficiencies
within their first thirty hours of credit. Even though the deficiencies
are in the high school background, they are to be made up with college
level work.
The College Preparatory Curriculum Requirements:
- English
-
4 units of English are required in high school.
- If a student has fewer
than that, he or she must take the CPE (College Placement Exam) to
determine placement in Learning Support courses.
- Math
-
4 units including 2 units of Algebra and 1 unit of Geometry are
required in high school.
- If a student has fewer than that, he or she
must take the CPE (College Placement Exam) to determine placement in
Learning Support courses.
- Natural Science
-
3 units including 1 unit of Physical Science and 2 units of Lab Science
courses are required in high school.
- If a student has fewer than that,
he or she must choose one Area D science course and earn a "C" or
better. Eligible science courses with no prerequisites include: BIOL1101, GEOL1121,
PHSC1011 (MATH1111/1101 recommended), PHSC1012 (PHSC1011 recommended).
- Social Science
-
3 units including 1 unit of American History, 1 unit of World History,
and 1 unit of Economics & Government are required in high school.
- If a
student has fewer than that, he or she must choose one Area III course
(except POL101) and earn a "C" or better. Eligible social science courses with no prerequisites include:
ANTH1102, ANTH2011, ECON1810, GEOG1111, HIST1111, HIST1112, HIST2111, HIST2112,
PHIL1000, PSYC1101, PSYC1103, PSYC2150, SOCI1101, SOCI1160, and SOCI2241.
- Foreign Language
-
2 units of one foreign language are required in high school.
- If a
student has two deficiencies, he or she must complete both the 1001 &
1002 levels of one foreign language with "C's" or better.
- If a student
has one deficiency, he or she must complete the 1002 level of one
foreign language with a "C" or better (may take the 1001 level for
college credit
only if the student has no HS credit in that language).

Important Points to Remember:
- If a course is used to satisfy a CPC deficiency, then it will not count
toward core requirements; additional coursework must be selected to
satisfy core requirements.
(See Core Curriculum).
- A "C" or better must be earned in CPC courses to satisfy the deficiency.
- Grades earned in CPC courses do count in grade point averages.
- Hours in CPC courses count as institutional hours toward full time
enrollment status but do not count as hours earned.
- Students must make up CPC deficiencies prior to earning 30 semester hours to
prevent a hold on their registration.
- CPC deficiencies will be indicated on the students' printed schedule sheet
in the area marked "Registration Holds and Special Conditions."
- Courses used to satisfy CPC deficiencies will be indicated in a special
section on the student progress report and will show zero hours earned.
