SABR 2930/4930: Art and Architecture of New York City
Michael Schwartz (3hrs)

A course in the inaugural offering of ASU’s brand new Study Away Program. Seven days in New York City during December 2010, four and half of these being required study on site with the instructor; and over a day and a half of free time (during the holiday season of early-mid December); course work concluding on campus Spring semester 2011. This course is a survey of the art and architecture in NYC, spanning Ancient Civilizations to the Contemporary art scene, including a number of the greatest art museums in the world, along with architectural walks exploring some of the greatest modern and postmodern buildings in the world.

SABR 2930  Studio Experience in New York City

Alan McTaggart (3 hrs)

The course is designed for the non-art major student desiring a studio experience.  Media choice and class time must be arranged by the individual instructor.  Prerequisite: permission of the instructor.

Since the experiential travel during the tour will not provide time for drawing, painting, sculpture; it is expected that a student will prepare a journal of the visual experience using digital photography, making notes, drawing if you like, and preparing an illustrated journal of things learned and experienced in New York, and assembled during the spring semester.   Art majors who join this class may choose to draw, paint, sculpt, use digital media, etc., with the permission of the instructor in the spring to create a body of work or illustrated journal, and likely have the course count as Art 4950, an advanced selected topics studio course.  All students enrolled will join in all the tours and museum visits led by the leaders and choose wisely to take full advantage of free time at night and on the free day.  There will be a required meeting of all participants prior to the trip and a meeting early in the spring term.  3 credit hours in either track will be earned.
