Having spent the majority of my adult life in the Southwest (Arizona and New Mexico), I have a natural aversion to scorpions, Gila monsters, and 110+ degree temperatures. On the plus side, living in the Southwest enabled me to develop a unique understanding of the social and multicultural issues affecting students in secondary and higher education. I hold degrees in English, Communication, Educational Technology, Language and Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies from the University of Minnesota, Arizona State University, and the University of New Mexico, respectively. My research interests focus on adolescent, media, and content area literacies
and the literacy practices of teachers and adolescents. My passion,
however, lies in examining the power and potential of media
literacy.
