Chapter 4 - Field Experiences - Update: The field experience hour's requirements have changed. Students must complete 300 field hours in 3 different settings. Please consult the field experience link form the Teacher Ed. webpage for more accurate information.
Chapter 5 - Electronic Portfolios (E-Portfolios)
Chapter 6 - E-Portfolio Requirements - Update: Only 3 artifacts are required for each of the 3 eportfolio headings, for a total of 9 artifacts.
Chapter 7 - MAT Practicum - Update: Practicum applications are submitted to the Teacher Education department after the student has attended their final graduation application advising appointment. Fall practicum applications are due no later than March 1st and Spring practicum applications are due no later than October 1st each year.
Chapter 8 - Certification and Graduation - Update: The graduation application fee has been raised to $50 effective Fall 2009
Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) - Initial Certification
The Master of Arts (MAT) degree is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor's degree in a field outside of education with specialization in a closely related area to an educational certification offered at GRU and are seeking initial teaching certification at the graduate level. Candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree and passed the State of Georgia certification exams will be eligible to begin teaching while completing the program. Courses are offered in the evening during the school year and during the day in the summer semester. Each education course will have a field component that can be completed in the candidate's classroom.
Candidates will be admitted to a certification field based on their undergraduate degree and the Closely Related Fields list from the Professional Standards Commission (see below). The candidates' content knowledge will be assessed using the existing content exam in the State of Georgia. Candidates must pass the GACE Basic Skills Exam and take the GACE Content Exam. Candidates that pass the GACE Content Exam will be judged to have sufficient content knowledge to begin teaching. If a passing score on the content exam is not achieved the candidate will have to complete extra coursework in content as a prerequisite to the program. Candidates will be expected to complete a minimum of 36 semester hours of coursework, a semester long practicum and an electronic portfolio in order to graduate and be recommended for certification.
NOTE: All field experiences and practicum teaching must be within 50 miles of GRU. Field experiences and practicum teaching must be in the area of certification candidate is seeking.
Fall practicum applications are due no later than March 1st and Spring practicum applications are due no later than October 1st each year. A $200 practicum fee will be assessed (along with your tuition) to provide a stipend for your Mentor Teacher and travel expenses for your University Supervisor.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) - Advanced Certification
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction program is designed for candidates who already hold a valid teaching certification and wish an advanced graduate degree and T-5 certification. The program consists of 36 semester hours. All content coursework will reflect existing certification areas.
There will be field assignments required to be completed in each education course in the program. Candidates will be expected to complete an electronic portfolio in addition to the M.Ed. coursework to demonstrate their ability with the conceptual framework principles of the College of Education.

Educational Specialist (Ed. S.)
The Education Specialist (Ed. S.) in Curriculum and Instruction program is designed for candidates who already hold a valid teaching certification and wish an advanced graduate degree and T-6 certification. The program consists of 30 semester hours. All content coursework will reflect existing certification areas.
There will be field assignments required to be completed in each education course in the program. Candidates will be expected to complete an electronic portfolio in addition to the Ed. S. coursework to demonstrate their ability with the conceptual framework principles of the College of Education.
