Preparing A Comprehensive Program Review

Contents:

Overview
Structure
Recommended Information & Potential Sources

Overview

“The goal of academic program review in the University S ystem of Georgia is the improvement of programs based on information gathered and analyzed during a cyclical review process.   In conducting program review, institutional faculty and administrators assess progress over time, analyze costs and benefits of programs, and make strategic decisions about program modification.”

The ASU academic unit's task, in brief, is to review the unit's academic program and, where appropriate, compare it to ASU as a whole, to similar programs in the USG, and to programs across the nation.

Information on ASU can be obtained from

Office of Institutional Research
Projects Office
Banner reports
Crystal reports
Department Chair
Deans

Information on the USG can be obtained from:

Information Digest University System of Georgia (http://www.usg.edu/pubs/info_digest/ )
See Access Statistical Reports (http://www.usg.edu)

For information on programs nationally :

Check the US Dept. of Education( http://www.ed.gov ), especially the National Center for Education Statistics ( http://nces.ed.gov/ )

Start with the Digest of Education Statistics ( http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/ ). Select a year. In Chapter 3, and you will find information in the following categories:

Enrollment, Staff, Faculty, Institutions, Degrees, Outcomes, Student Charges and Student Financial Assistance, Income, and Expenditures.

For guidelines on program design, suggested faculty work loads, etc, check with relevant national organizations.

If the program involves teacher preparation, information from the Georgia Department of Education ( http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/ ) may be useful; however, the latest NCATE report will probably provide enough information.
