| Dr. Sam Sullivan
Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dr.
Sullivan is a physicist and an experienced academic administrator. A native of
Charlotte, North Carolina, he attended North Carolina Central University on a
football scholarship-and as a varsity tennis player-in order to earn a B.S. degree
in physics and mathematics. He then pursued graduate studies at Howard University,
earning the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in physics and winning a postdoctoral research
fellowship funded by the U.S. Geological Survey on the strength of his research
into magnetic properties of lunar and terrestrial glasses.
In 1971 he
joined the physics faculty of Federal City College in Washington, D.C. He then
became an assistant and associate dean in the School of Natural, Applied, and
Health Sciences. He participated in the creation of the University of the District
of Columbia through the merger of Federal City College, Washington Technical Institute,
and the District of Columbia Teachers College. Thereafter at the University of
the District of Columbia he held a number of senior administrative positions.
Among them were positions as acting provost and vice president for academic affairs,
and university ombudsman. His accomplishments included the establishment of a
new Division of Research, Training, and International Programs, which produced
an increase in grant and contract awards of more than $20 million. Dr. Sullivan
also led efforts to develop programs with agencies and institutions in several
other nations, including Egypt, the Dominican Republic, South Africa, and Russia.
During
the 2000-2001 academic year, Dr. Sullivan served Morris Brown College in Atlanta,
Georgia, in a number of roles, including interim provost and vice president for
academic affairs, and director of institutional effectiveness.
"Dr.
Sullivan is a good fit with the mission, traditions, and future of Augusta State
University," says President William A. Bloodworth, Jr. "His scientific
background is a plus for this university and its community. He has great personal
energy. And the extraordinary breadth of his administrative experience will serve
us well as we pursue the Board of Regents' vision to expand the opportunity of
higher education for the people of Georgia."
