SIGMA RHO CHAPTER HISTORY

The dream of having the epitome of finer womanhood on the campus of Augusta State University began with Dr. Lola Richardson, who was the president of the Eta Theta Zeta graduate chapter of Augusta, Georgia, and her husband, Dr. Samuel Richardson a professor at Augusta State University and member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.  The Eta Theta Zeta Chapter then formed a membership committee who sought to recruit only the best women as members of their sorority.  Hence, on April 13, 2002 six ladies crossed into the world of Zeta Phi Beta and brought a level of distinction to the campus of Augusta State University that only Zeta women can bring.  The chartered members of the Sigma Rho Chapter known to the Zeta world as the ‘Z-Lite-Ful Six” are  Ms. Regina Hull, Ms. Leteta Tucker, Ms. Sherell Ellis, Mrs. Sharhonda Cofer, Ms. Olivra Long, and Ms. Chantell Vinson.

After so much anticipation, September 9, 2002 Sigma Rho received its official charter as an organization on the campus of Augusta State University.  Ms. Olivra Long served as the chapter’s first president in 2002 and Mrs. Betty Bryant, the current president of Eta Theta Zeta Chapter, served as the chapter’s first graduate advisor for 2002-2003.  During Ms. Long’s administration, the chapter added to its membership on December 18, 2002 by welcoming four young ladies Ms. Latonia Gilbert, Mrs. Laura Logan (Jones), Ms. Shanda Reese, and Ms. Andrea Wilson into the Greek world of Zeta as “The Four Virtuous Doves.”  Ms. Chantell Vinson served her term as the chapter’s second president during 2002-2003.  Ms. Regina Hull served as the chapter’s third president for 2003-2004 and Mrs. E. Virginia Johnson became the second graduate advisor for the Sigma Rho Chapter in 2003 and she currently remains the chapter’s advisor.  In her term, the chapter saw a need to expand our membership and welcomed three young women “Blue Confuzion” Ms. Aarika Nathan, Ms. Chashawna Wesby, and Ms. Regina Thomas into the world Zeta on November 17, 2003.

Since then we have expanded our chapter by adding five young deserving ladies Ms. Erica Johnson, Mrs. Amanda Hickerson, Ms. Stephanie Ramsey, Ms. De’Andra Dooley, and Ms. Regina Nicole Thomas to our roster on December 4, 2004.  On May 1, 2005, the Sigma Rho Chapter welcomed  "Blue Devastation" Ms. Kay Pounds and Ms. Melissa Dukes.  On April 12, 2006 we welcomed "Doves of Determination" Ms. Mia Lakes and Ms. Sharon Thornton.  With the leadership of the past presidents and work ethic of the chapter members, the chapter made many accomplishments and contributions which laid the foundation for present and future members to build upon.

Over the past years, Sigma Rho has rendered service and received awards in many areas such as Golden Harvest Food Bank, March of Dimes, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots, Little Steps Program, Blood Drives, Book Scholarship, Habitat for Humanities, Community Clean-Ups, Jenkins White Elementary Step Team, Doctor’s Hospital, State Community Service Award 2003, Undergraduate Advisor Relationship Award 2004, and many more.  At the the present time we have donated our times as tutors for MACH Academy, participated with the Salvation Army during Christmas, and consistently raising money for the March of Dimes.

Under the leadership of the current executive board, Ms. Regina N. Thomas (President), Ms. Kay Pounds (Vice-President), Ms. Mia Lakes (Secretary), Ms. Sharon Thornton (Treasurer) we will continue to uphold the principles of our fine sorority through community service and honorary awards.
