Chemistry 4551, Physical Biochemistry, is the first course in a two-semester sequence. We will focus on the physical chemistry of biological molecules, including amino acids, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids, emphasizing the relationship between structure and physiological function. This is a 4-hour course, including 3 hours of lecture and a 3-hour laboratory period each week. Prerequisites include Chem 1212, Chem 3412, and either Math 2011 or 1220, C or better in each. Chem 4541 is the 3-hour lecture-only portion of the course. Either course prepares the student for the second course in the biochemistry sequence. The sequence is strongly recommended for both premedical and predental students.
