Majors and Minors
Requirements for a Major in Chemistry - Biochemistry
The biochemistry track is ideal for students wishing to prepare for entrance to medical school, dental school or graduate study in biochemistry. (For more information on What You Can Do With a Chemistry Degree
For additional information, the American Chemical Society (ACS) has a
chemistry career website that you can check out.
In order to earn a major in chemistry under the biochemistry track you must take at least 45 semester hours in chemistry.
The Chemistry (Biochemistry Track) Curriculum:
The 45 hours in chemistry must include the introductory chemistry sequence CHEM 1211 and 1212 and CHEM 2810 (Quantitative Analysis). The remaining hours are listed below:
CHEM 3411 and 3412 (Organic Chemistry I and II)
- CHEM 3721 (Physical Chemistry I)
- CHEM 3810 (Advanced Organic Chemistry)
- CHEM 3820 (Laboratory Management and Safety)
- CHEM 4210 (Advanced Inorganic Chemistry)
- CHEM 4551 and 4552 (Biochemistry I and II)
- CHEM 4840 (Instrumental Analysis)
In addition to courses in the major, you must take PHYS 1111 and 1112 along with MATH 1113 (Pre-calculus) and MATH 2011 (Calculus I). We also require a computer programming course such as CSCI 1200. You must also meet all University Core Curriculum and graduation requirements as outlined in the university catalog.
In addition to the above courses, a certain number of upper division electives are also required for the biochemistry track. Considering the importance of molecular and human biology to biochemistry, students often take electives in biology, such as Cell Biology, Genetics, Endocrinology, etc., in order to help fulfill the elective requirements. Chemistry electives are also routinely offered. Work on an undergraduate research project with one of our faculty is also encouraged, and this can serve as an upper level elective as well.
Regular communication with your academic advisor is necessary to ensure satisfactory completion of your degree requirements and to guarantee that you are progressing along the lines dictated by your future interests in chemistry.
