Letter From The Chair
The Department of Chemistry and Physics at Augusta State University is a vibrant and growing department offering BS degrees in chemistry, physics, biochemistry, and the associated secondary education tracks. I am especially excited about our new I-MAT program for chemistry and physics education as a streamlined program for a Bachelors degree, Masters degree, and teaching certification. We also support pre-engineering and other pre-professional programs such as pre-medical, pre-dental, and pre-pharmacy. Chemistry and physics are central sciences that provide an excellent background for careers in many allied fields.
As a student here, your classes will be small, with less than 50 in your introductory courses and 10-20 in your advanced courses. Our strong curriculum includes hands-on work with modern scientific instruments and state-of-the-art computer systems. Opportunities to work with faculty mentors on undergraduate research projects provide individualized instruction in areas of special interest to each student. A variety of scholarship programs assist our majors. Our graduates are successful in entering graduate degree programs or securing rewarding jobs.
What I find most satisfying about being a part of this department is the sense of community—a close-knit group of students, a caring faculty, and active chemistry and physics/pre-engineering clubs. The learning center is filled with students not just during the free tutoring sessions, but most hours of the day either studying or just hanging out.
The whole department is alive with activity and is a great thing to be a part of. Stop by the 3rd floor of Science Hall and take a tour, talk to an advisor, and explore the opportunities. See how to become a part of it.
