Course Description
ASU Catalog - "the study and utilization
of technology in musical applications. Emphasis on basic computer
notation systems, MIDI sequencing, and CAI. Successful completion of this course
fulfills the Computer Applications
in Music Proficiency requirement.". The focus of the course will be use
of Finale, the premier music
notation
application currently available. Basic concepts of MIDI will be covered, and
additional music applications will be
surveyed.

Reading List
The Finale Primer: Mastering the Art of Music Notation With Finale , 2nd Edition by Bill Purse
Required Materials:
1. A three-ring notebook for handouts, assignments, etc, and a pen/pencil
2. Two 3 and 1/2" floppy discs (these will be formatted for Macintosh) for storing your project files.
Conceptual Framework Items Addressed:
1. Understanding the central concepts,
tools of inquiry and structures of the discipline and be able to create
learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for
learners.
4. Understand and use a variety of
instructional strategies to encourage the learner's development of critical
and creative thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
6. Use knowledge of effective verbal,
nonverbal, and information technology techniques to foster active inquiry,
collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
Assignments and Quizzes
There will be five (5) Finale projects and
five quizzes to be completed. The five Finale projects make up 75%
of your grade, and carry a maximum of 750 points. The five quizzes count 50
points each, for a total maximum
of 250 points. Quiz scores account for 25% of your final grade.

For Finale projects, 10 points will be
deducted for each day they are late, then a "0" will be given for those that
are more than seven days late. Projects can be submitted in either of two ways,
as long as the Instructor is
informed (in advance) of the method chosen. 1) A copy of your Finale project may
be submitted on a computer
disk. I will make a copy of your disk file and return your disk on the next day
of class, or 2) you may leave a copy
of your completed work on one of the lab computers. Save the file with a short
descriptive title, followed by your
initials.
