Welcome to the Survey of Chemistry!
CHEM 1151 is designed for the non-science major or, more specifically, to instruct prenursing students in the concepts and basic computational skills of the chemist. Our survey of chemistry will cover atoms, molecules, chemical reactions, equilibrium, energy and light, to name a few topics. As often as possible, our exploration and applicaiton of chemistry will be focus on the medical fields. The prerequisite for CHEM 1151 is MATH 1111 or 1101.
Our meeting times are Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 11:15 am. Please be in your seat and ready to experience chemistry at 10am. Laboratories are held on Tuesday afternoon from 1:00pm to 2:45pm.
CHEM 1151 is a laboratory course, and thus we will investigate matter and energy in the lab with the same zeal we apply to our 'lecture' portion of the course. That is, Chemistry is, normally, a laboratory science, so the importance of knowing how properties are discovered or measured is important in deciding whether you trust the data you see at work or in the news. That said, you'll need to do your best to connect the concepts explored in the lab to those covered in 'lecture'.
A Guided Inquiry Approach
As often as possible, you will be working in groups to answer a series of questions aimed at guiding you to a discovery about chemistry. This method, known as guided inquiry, has been shown to greatly increase student comprehension and long term memory of the facts and concepts. In addition, this model has you practice a skill desired in all professions--communication. It is my hope that you take a few minutes and look over the "Study Help" link to find a different approach to learning that may improve your efficiency in learning.
