Principles of Chemistry I
CHEM 1211 is the first in a two semester sequence that introduces the fundamental concepts and skills to the aspiring scientist. The main theme of the course is the development of the language of chemistry with respect to atomic theory, chemical reactions (stoichiometry), gases, and thermochemistry. The material of CHEM 1211 must be mastered for continuation on to more advanced chemistry courses, such as CHEM 1212 or Organic chemistry, since every topic of 1211 is utilized within these other courses.
Important Note
It is very common for a student to have experienced the material in CHEM 1211 prior to class. While this is a good thing, it also leads many a student to underestimate their own understanding. For that reason, give equal study time to all major concepts, even if the topic appears familiar and 'easy'. The questions asked in the collegiate course are the main difference between the course you have had in high school, so beware relying on your past knowledge to get you through this course.
