“I remember one election – whether
when Major Black defeated Tom
Watson, or a prohibition election
about 1890 I can’t say now, - but the
line was formed early in the morning
at the Court House and wrapped
down Telfair St., out Center to Greene,
and nearly up to the Court House
again.” (p.10)

“Which brings me to the Tournament on
Greene St. in front of the new Post
Office. I don’t know the occasion for it,
but the game was to see who, riding
horseback, could stick his lance through
the greatest number of 2 ½ inch rings
held by a frame on the side of the road
or lists. Harris D’Antignac won handily,
to much applause and may have been
allowed to kiss his little lady’s hand in
recompense -.” (p. 78)

“About 1888 the Savannah River had one
of its great floods. I was visiting Cousin
Lennie Bassford in Columbia County at
the time, and as I couldn’t get out of the
house much on account of the rains…I
think we had no rumors in the country of
a flood; but when I got off the train the
evidences were everywhere.“ (p. 38)
