ANCIENT DAYS IN AUGUSTA

“Across Elbert St. was the large
Sibley house, - one of the Sibley Mill
people, no doubt; but all grown up,
and so outside of our orbit. I went
to school with Josiah Sibley, of
another branch of the family, living
at the corner of Greene and
Cummings Streets.” (p. 20)

“It was a great day when we were led out to the
Park by our nurse, the children holding hands so
as not to get lost. There we played on the thin
lawn, hid behind bushes, and rode the cast-iron
lions stationed about the band-stand. I half
recollect that I got up the courage to stick my hand
in the mouth of one of the lions – or maybe I saw
someone else do so.” (p.70)
