Title: The Old Union Station and Statue of Patrick Walsh (Augusta, GA)
Creator: Unknown
Subject: Augusta (GA) Buildings
History (Augusta, GA);
Description: The portrait sculpture by George Thomas Brewster (b1862-d1943) dedicated in 1913, honors Patrick Walsh, who was born in Ireland in 1840 and served as Augusta's mayor, a Georgia legislator and a United States Senator. As a young man he fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, earning the rank of lieutenant. Walsh worked as a journalist for the Associated Press before coming to Augusta as a journalist for the Sentinel and Chronicle, where he later became business manager and ultimately owner and publisher. Walsh died in 1899. The sculpture was installed under the direction of the Walsh Memorial Association for the people of Augusta and Georgia. For related reading see Marguerite F. Fogleman's "Historical Markers and Monuments of Richmond County," Augusta, GA: Richmond County Historical Society, 1986. IAS files contain an article from the Augusta Chronicle, June 21, 1913, pg. 1-3, 6.
In the image, the statue sits in front of the Union Station building which served as the main passenger railroad station for Augusta from 1902/3 until 1966. It replaced a building of the same function built in the 1870s, which replaced a station built in the 1830s. This building was razed in 1972/3 to make room for the central post office. The statue still stands.
