Title: The Augusta Canal, Old Headgates (Augusta, GA)
Creator: Unknown
Subject: Augusta (GA) Buildings
History (Augusta, GA)
Description: This is the upriver approach to the original headgates structure for the Augusta Canal. Today this approach has been dammed off and is dry land. The photographer was standing approximately where the new (1874) headgates are located. In the background center, the roof of the barbeque pit is visible. To the right of the barbeque pit and slightly uphill, the dance pavilion is just visible amongst the trees. The area where the gatekeepers cottage should be is obscured by trees. The date of this picture depends on when the dam was extended to leave the old headgates dry, also the presence of the barbeque pit and dance pavilion places it after the 1880s. Likely this picture is sometime between the 1880s and the refurbishment in the 1930s.
