Green Letters (sub-series) Date 2.4: 1911-1929 Bulk date (1915-1919) Extent 2.5: 8 Folders or Hollinger box Creator 2.6: Nellie P. Green Scope and Content 3.1: Contains a series of letters written to Miss Nellie Green by relatives and gentlemen correspondents. The bulk of the correspondence is written by soldiers Miss Green met at Camp Hancock, Augusta Georgia, both during their assignments at Camp Hancock and overseas. Of note are a couple of letters detailing the Mexican conflict prior to US entry into WWI. Administrative/Biographical History 2.7: Nellie Green moved from Charlotte, North Carolina with her family sometime in 1914 by the evidence of the letters. Nellie appears in the Augusta City directory in 1917 living with Mary B. Green, Martha J. Green, Margaret W. Green and Thomas W. Green. Interviews with Mr. Bailie, who was acquainted with the family, say that the family continued to live together all their lives. Margaret married a Tate but moved back in with her sisters when she was widowed. Mr. Bailie mentioned a brother Philip who is also mentioned in the letters. The relationship of Thomas is unknown at this writing though, by City Directory evidence, he lived with the family for many years. Mr. Bailie acquired these letters when Nellie, Mary, Margaret “Pat”, and Philip were living at 829 Heard Avenue. Miss Green died on July 23, 1996 at the age of 97 and is buried in Westover Memorial Park. The Augusta City directory lists Miss Green as starting her career as a stenographer with the Louch and Varden Agency. At the end of her career, she was an executive secretary for the Charleston and West Carolina Railroad. She was the founding first president and charter president of the Pilot Club of Augusta Inc. and a life-long member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church.
