Dr. Robert L. Johnston (d. May 26, 2011) was born in Erie, PA, he grew up in Louisville KY, joined the U.S. Air Force in 1963, he earned an Associate’s degree at Jefferson Community College in 1977, a B.S. with honors in 1979 and an MA both in Sociology from the University of Louisville. He earned his PhD (also in Sociology) in 1985 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. A member of Phi Kappa Phi, Professor Johnston taught at Augusta State University from 1986 until his death where he won the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award in 2003 and the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2007. His areas of specialty included: Sociology of Organizations, Sociology of Work & Occupations, Social Movements & Collective Behavior, Research Methods (Statistics), Urban Sociology & Urban Social Problems Program Evaluation.
