Core III: The Middle School as Organization
(1) Research on Adolescent Needs
(a) View Managing the Disruptive Classroom and respond to these focus questions:
                    Why are classrooms more disruptive today?
                    What are the characteristics of disruptive behavior?
                    How do some learning environments encourage disruptive behavior?
                    Describe successful interventions for managing disruptive behavior?
(b) Review in media services two videos on adolescents in the classroom.
      Design a video review sheet and use it for critical analysis
(c) Generate questions for a videotaped interview with adolescents in your neighborhood. Present video to class.
(d) Develop a list of adolescent developmental characteristics in the following five areas: cognitive, emotional, physical, social, and character.

(2) Group Project- Develop a Model of Middle School Organization including: examples
                    General Organization Standards
                    Development of a Team Philosophy
                    Curriculum Mapping Guidelines
                    Suggested Interdisciplinary Unit Format
                    Example of a well developed interdisciplinary unit
                    Flexible Block Schedule
                    An Advisory program based on integration of curriculum
                    Activity Programs for Adolescents
                    Plans for overall community involvement
                    Plans for Evaluation of school improvement, progress, and assessment
        Assessment:
                    PowerPoint demonstration of overall organizational plan.  examples
                    Videotape of interdisciplinary unit planning session
                    Design role play for in class advisory program discussion

Rubrics for each assessment activity will be provided along with peer evaluation sheets
 
(3) Field Experience
        Focus on teaching skills/ how decisions are made
        Development of instructional strategies to meet a variety of student needs
        Work with students in small groups and some whole class lessons
        Examination of content standards, courses of study and curriculum guides
        Examine and develop appropriate means to assess content learning congruent with                
        instructional approaches
(4) News Conference
        -Subscribe to Internet News Conference
        -Extend conversation of issues raised in class and readings, particularly Middle School Case
         Studies
(5) Research Journal Articles
        -Read five current Research Articles from Middle School Journals
        -Write reflections for each article
