Conclusion

To research effective classroom management and its effect on student learning, we decided to interview teachers and students to find out exactly what they thought about the issue.  Our lab placements allowed us to be at two different schools with completely different settings.  One school was located in a suburban area while the other was in an urban area.  Observing two different types of classrooms allowed us to compare our notes and see the differences and similarities in classroom management.

Questions that we asked the teachers included the following:

  • Do you think classroom management directly influences student learning?

  • Do you let your students participate in the creation of the classroom rules?

  • Do you feel that group activities are  a disruption or an effective teaching and learning strategy?

  • What are three tips for classroom management that you would give to a new teacher?

  • What are some common classroom management mistakes that you have seen?

Questions that we asked the students included:

  • Do you like to work in groups?

  • If you were allowed to create the class rules, would be more apt to follow them?

  • What types of activities motivate you to learn?

Using the responses from these questions, we compiled a list of tips and strategies suggested from the teachers and the students.  We also compiled a list of common classroom management mistakes made by teachers.

  • Our fellow student teachers also surveyed their students and teachers to find out what motivates students.  To see their results on "What Motivates Students," click on the link.
