  • Devote time at the beginning of the year to have the students set the class rules - students have a need to be empowered.

  • Model the behaviors you want your students to engage in.

  • Keep the students involved in active learning.

  • Engage student learning through cooperative group work, group discussions, debates, and role playing.

  • Assign a role to each student in a group to keep students on task.

  • Look for the positive side of a situation.

  • Realize that students are individuals, not robots.

  • Each student has something to offer a classroom.

  • Allow the students to learn from each other, and maybe even teach you.

  • Make the students responsible for their own actions.

  • Don't ask why-ask how it will help them achieve their goal.

  • Circulate through the room - physical proximity to students can stop inappropriate behavior before it starts.

  • Plan for student successes.

  • Have a back-up activity for those unexpected events.

  • Have something for students to do when they finish an assignment early.

  • Make a positive initial contact with each student everyday by saying "Good Morning" or "How are you?"

  • Ignore behaviors that may possibly increase by attending to them.

  • Involve students in the evaluation of their own work and your lessons.

  • Vary style as well as the content of the lesson in order to address diverse student learning styles.

  • Use authentic assessments such as projects, journals, and portfolios.

  • Relate materials to students' lives whenever possible.

  • Remind yourself of what you liked and disliked about school and apply those ideas to your classroom.
