Setting Up the In-Class Essay in Engl. 1102
1. Leave the font
(Calibri), font size (11), and margins (1” on all sides) in their default mode.
2. From
the Insert tab > Page Number > Top of page > Plain Number 3>
Type in your surname, press the space
bar once, and close the header (upper right corner)
3. From the Home tab
> Paragraph [small down arrow in lower right corner]> Indents &
Spacing > Line spacing 2
4. From the Home tab
> Paragraph [small down arrow in lower right corner]> Indents &
Spacing > 0 pts. before and after
5. From the Home tab
> Paragraph [small down arrow in lower right corner]> Indents &
Spacing > click “Don’t add space
between paragraphs of the same style”
6. From the Home tab
> Paragraph [small down arrow in lower right corner]> Line & Page
Breaks >unclick Widow/Orphan
7. In
the upper left corner of page 1, provide four lines of information: (1) Your
name (first name first), (2) the instructor, (3) the course (including
section), and (4) the date (military or European style – e.g., 2 October 2010)
8. Type out your
complete title, supplying (a) author’s full name, (b) genre of the literary
work, (c) title of the literary work, (d) clear indication of the assigned
topic (or your “take” on the assigned topic). Only select/highlight and center
the title after you have typed out
your complete title.
9. (1) Be sure to supply items (8a) through (8d) in your first
paragraph, as well as in your title. (2) Only press the Enter or Return key at
the end of paragraphs, not at the end of each line. (3) Be sure to periodically
save your document to your “Z” or “Spots” drive: “Office Button” (upper left
corner of the screen) > Save As > press down arrow key to find Z or Spots
drive > save the document with a descriptive name. (4) Save your document
one final time before printing out. (5) To print: “Office Button” > Quick
Print or Print > Pawprint > Yes.
