Engl. 4420: Shakespeare

Extra Credit Paper

The four main 1-volume Shakespeares split in the texts they give of Two Gentlemen of Verona on whether, in 2.4, Thurio remains in the scene or exits (at different points) to later re-enter and deliver the line "Madam, my lord your father would speak with you" (about line 112).

Discuss in detail (five pages or more, double-spaced, in a font of 10 or 11, with one-inch margins all around) how a plausible case could be made, relative to characterization (e.g., the psychology, thoughts, emotions, reactions of Thurio in the particular circumstances) and themes or ideas (portrayal of human nature or human behavior or human psychology, or other themes) by Thurio remaining on stage and a servant delivering the line, or by Thurio exiting the stage at slightly differing points where two of the 1-volume Shakespeares have the character exiting. That is, either through Thurio's remaining on stage or through Thurio's exiting, what ideas may be conveyed about Thurio in particular, the social situation (people interacting in society, romantic rivals interacting in society, the particular individuals interacting at this point in the scene), the working of the Duke's household, human personality, human behavior, polite society, romantic love, and so on. Your discussion should include an analysis of the slightly differing points that two of the 1-volume Shakespeares have Thurio exiting from the scene -- that is, why these particular points, and what effects or ideas might be conveyed by the differences in the exit point.

Be sure to keep explicitly clear which 1-volume Shakespeare edition is being discussed or used at whatever juncture in your essay.
