=====================================================
Because of parking limitations, please encourage students are encouraged to carpool.
The Hindu Temple we will be visiting is on Luke Road, a cul de sac off Wrightsboro Road, about 1-1/2 miles west of the Augusta Mall, about 15 or 20 minutes from the ASU campus. Driving down Wrightsboro, on the left side of the road you will see Providence Baptist Church. About 100 to 150 yards farther on the left side is Luke Road.
Students who visit the temple should be firmly reminded to dress modestly and to conduct themselves with respect -- no joking, laughing, loud voices, etc. If they will not behave with respect they should not come. Anyone who enters the temple is supposed to remove shoes, or other outer footwear, and leave the shoes outside. Socks are permitted. In many Asian societies it is a sign of extreme disrespect to point the soles of your feet toward another person or toward objects with religious connotations. If you see anyone sitting with the soles of his or her feet projecting toward a representative from the Hindu Temple or toward the religious idols, please ask the person to sit in a different position.
The Interdisciplinary Lab writing assignment: write a
detailed description of the outside as well as inside of the building or
buildings that are part of the Hindu Temple compound. The essay should
run two or more pages, wordprocessed or typed, and is due up to a week
after the event.
Synagogue visit
See the end of the Class Schedule for time(s) and date.
If the Synagogue is Congregation Children of Israel, it is located about a
half mile west (towards Evans) from the main Augusta State campus on Walton Way.
Coming from campus, it is on the right hand side of the street. The same advice
about conduct applies as for the Hindu Temple and the Church -- these are houses
of worship, not just academic sites to visit.
Islamic Center (Mosque) Lab
See the end of the Class Schedule for time(s) and date. The address is as follows:
The Islamic Center
3416 Middleton Drive
Augusta, GA, 30907
868-7278
The mosque is located near the Richmond County / Columbia County line close to Washington Road. If you're on Washington Road driving away from campus, headed toward Columbia County, you will turn left on Davant Street. (Davant Street is next to the NAPA Auto Store between the two auto dealerships, Bob Bennet Lincoln-Mercury and Milton Ruben Chevrolet.) On Davant Street proceed ahead a short way to a stop sign. You will see the mosque parking lot in front of you. The mosque is a rather ordinary looking building. As a special mark of respect women could cover their heads with a scarf, though it is not strictly required. Men and women will not be separated, will gather in the same large room. There probably will not be seats and they should expect to sit on the floor. Men and women should dress modestly. No shorts. Knees and upper arms should be covered. Shoes need to be removed in the antechamber of the mosque. Emphatically remind students to be respectful--no joking, horseplay, etc. Anyone who cannot be respectful should not attend.
Students unable to visit the mosque must view and write
a detailed summary, word processed or typed (due no later than a week from the
scheduled visit to the Islamic Center), of one of the following videotapes at
Media Services in Hardy Hall : The Story of Islam (VCT 134); Islam: Ritual and
Practice (VCT 27); Islam: Sister Relation to Judaism and Christianity (VCT 28);
