Key Points / Outline

There are two types of studies: analytic and enumerative. A single factor enumerative study might consist of examining cross-sectional data for differences using confidence intervals or hypothesis testing.

A single factor analytic study might consist of an experiment in which we look at varying levels of a single factor.  We will concentrate on experiments in which we are examining factors only at two levels called 2k experiments. Experimentation gained some notoriety when Genichi Taguchi introduced orthogonal arrays, but most recently in the press the area of design of experiments has been called multivariable testing.
