The main way to understand how to use the information from the textbook, as well as learn concepts that may only be implied in the reading, is to work problems. Generally speaking the more practice you get with working problems the:
Working problems is essential to your success in the class. The way you work them will help determine the level of your success. Although the answers are available in the solutions manual, you will learn the most by working them without looking at the solutions. If you must look at the solution in order to work it, then you ought to come back to the same problem later to make sure you can work it without the manual.
Some problems are merely practice for concepts that were carefully explained in the chapter. Other problems, however, are going to teach you (or help you discover) concepts that were not explained in so many words in the chapter, but are nonetheless important. Therefore ask yourself- What is this problem trying to teach me?
The best practice for tests is to duplicate test conditions. This means that ultimately you should strive to work the problems as if you were solving them on a test. Use the other members of your study group to help with this by scrambling problems from the various chapters to take a practice test. You may consider checking an organic textbook out of the library and using homework problems from the similar chapters to make up a practice test.
